Beyond the ordinary

Evening Time Approaches

The night becomes dimmer through the trees

Which gently sway in the night time breeze

The disappearing Sun glows gently in the distance

The afterglow meeting little resistance

As shadows start to form at will

Everything around becomes quiet and still

Tree branches make an eerie sight

As daytime now switches to become night

Shadows form like monsters in a story book

And clouds now darken, a dismal look

Mist gathers gently on the ground

The night makes nary an earthly sound

All quiet and still amongst a gentle wind

Oh how we long for nighttime to rescind

Bring back daylight, sunshine and all

As we awaken to natures call

Oh to hear the birds call at dawn

As they awaken early morn.

The Ghost Soldier

As the battalion races into battle

You can hear a Saber rattle

But as we charge with guns a blazing loud

He can be seen, leading the crowd

A Ghost on horseback brilliant white

In his suit of armor a scary sight

No one can believe their eyes it seems

He should only be seen in blood curdling dreams

But to us he is as real, as we are

Like us has traveled very far

Not in miles, but in time

Like a hero in a nursery rhyme

As we charge on and vanquish our foe

A thousand soldiers all in a row

He leads by example from the front

The cannon fire, he bears the brunt

Can the enemy see him we all think?

Or is it only us, and a curse of the drink

Imaginary or real boldly we wonder

We frightened soldiers in a politicians blunder

As the battle rages, he disappears as quickly as he came

And none of us even knew his name

Garden’s Early Awakening

In the spring all the Flowers come alive

Tulips rear their little head

From beneath the ground looking for light

To brighten up any flower bed

The grass needs cutting out comes the Mower

To shed its winter growth so long

Scampering field mice run away quickly

There’s always work to do from now on

Buds on the Roses looking for life

Getting ready to bloom in all colors

In the early morning Spring Sunlight

Just like all of the others

Also coming alive is the Gardeners pest

Dandelions and Thistles

They suddenly appear from the dead

With their colorful bristles

The Hedges need a good trimming

They have grown so bushy and high

If there not cut shortly

They will block out the light and the other plants will die

The Rhododendrons are blooming

Such a wonderful sight

Their Red and Blue flowers

Glisten brightly in the warm Sunlight

The Birds are singing their little hearts out

Such a wonderful sound

Other creatures are appearing

Even the Mole pokes his head above ground

It’s that time of year

There’s so much in the garden that needs attention

All the Ornament’s need painting

There’s just too much to mention

The Garden furniture is looking sad and rickety

I will be Sanding and Painting all day

But the garden soon looks bright and wonderful to

But that’s the joy of Gardening or so they say

As Spring progresses the aroma in the garden

Is a nice heavenly smell

That’s when you know

All in life is going well

A early walk around the Garden is  joy to behold

I will cherish forever or at least until I grow old.

My Garden Menagerie

My Garden has a lot of visitors

Who seem to move in and make it their home

At night the garden comes alive

As they all wake up and begin to roam

My garden seems to be their sanctuary

A Hedgehog moved in not so long ago

A lovely creature like rotund ball was he

But soon he had a mate in tow

Now suddenly the one has now become five

A triplet of Hoglet’s seem to have arrived

It’s cute to see them out together at night

And to see that thy have all survived

I have a hidden trail camera that captures them on film

So I feed them every night

And soon they all arrive to feed

It’s such an amazing magical sight

I also have a Fox who calls in every evening

And I have captured him on film each time he visits

I put some food out for him to eat

Which he eats in a very few minutes

He has a shiny Orange and Red coat

White belly and black ear tips

Though he does not stay to long

He does make a few regular trips

One Day whilst the Hedge hogs were feeding

From the bowl of food I had put out that day

Suddenly a Rat turned up to help himself

I thought the Hedgehog would make him go away

But there they were one either side

Eating away oblivious to one another it would appear to me

I will never understand how this could take place

It just goes to show how strange Garden Creatures can be

There’s a little Robin who hops about at night

And an old Thrush who makes an appearance too

They seem to parade in front of the camera

Showing off that’s what they seem to do

When I retrieve my Camera every morning

It’s great to see all this garden activity

I feel privileged that all these lovely creatures

Should come and visit me.

The Old Man down the Road

Just a short distance from my home

Only a mile or so away

Lives an old man and his dog

Just some old stray

He found wondering around whilst out on his walk

Took him home for a good feed

Gave him someone to whom he could talk

Growing old can be lonely

For a man of ninety-three

A former old war hero

With his pension and gammy knee

But he and Butch his dog

Could be seen around and about

Even though he had trouble walking

Through old age and a bit of gout

His life to him was fulfilled

With an odd beer or two

With Butch his new best friend

They could do whatever they wanted to do

I used to see them pass by

Quite often you see

I would give them a wave

And they would say hello to me

Over the years as time flew by

Seeing them ambling along the lane

Became an early morning ritual

But I still did not know his name

It turned out to be Charlie

So both he and Butch who was an old Labrador

Became great friends of mine

As each morning they passed by my door

They kept themselves to them selves

Rarely did Charlie pass the time of day

Not out of rudeness

Just had nothing to say

But every morning I got a smile a wave and a strong Hello

As Charlie passed by my cottage with old Butch in tow

This went on for many a year

I used to get a wave and hello

Until one Snow layered morning

I was concerned because they did not appear

It turned out that they been found a few miles away

Victims of the snow and the cold I did fear

Sadly now it would seem they never grow older

And amazingly at Charlie’s funeral the church was full with neighbours

Close to a hundred or more all packed together

All sang their hearts out

All had made the effort despite the inclement weather

When it was all over a real surprise was had

When they were clearing out Charlies old house

They did not expect to find much

Just a few meagre belongings and the odd mouse

But hidden away in an old Bureau draw put out of sight some years before

Was a collection of pictures and Memorabilia wrapped in a old cloth

Showing Charlie in Uniform in the First World War

Along with some comrades of his old regiment hidden away from any old moth

There was a small box that was the most astonishing of all

For inside wrapped up neatly was a Victoria Cross and another medal or two

So neat and so small it turns out old Charlie was a war Hero

It’s the secret he kept known only to a chosen few

So it’s amazing to think he was a man I once thought I knew

I used to wave to daily as he passed by my Cottage, him and old Butch the dog his best friend

But never realised he was such a hero

Right up to his life’s end.

Our Mum

Mum washes dishes and cleans all day

Cooks hot meals, come what may

Just to feed her large family

Who appreciate her efforts don’t you see

That’s why Mothers Day is such special time

We like her to rest, to keep in her prime

So we do all the work and let her rest

Because she earned it we are quite a test

A boistrous crowd of kids are we

Quite a leg on the family tree

So Mum deserves all the love we give

Without her how on earth would we live

Nurse Mary

Mary is a district nurse

She travels round each day

To see her patients, give them the care they need

As she wends her merry way

She has her trusty bicycle

Which is nearly as old as she?

But it lets her peddle for miles and miles

So she is as fit as fit can be

In her basket which fits upon the front

She carries all she may need

And she can be seen by every one

Travelling around at her own speed

There’s Mrs Maguire at Appleton Court

A saintly woman of means

But her health is not what it should be

And when Mary calls her face just gleams

To see someone so caring

Who looks after all her needs?

And to while away the time and make some tea

And bring happiness, she always succeeds

Old Mr Partridge at Apple Road

Who lives alone now his wife has passed away

Who is a miserable old so and so

But who Mary still calls on every day

She cooks and cleans but he still moans

The world need’s putting to right

He complains he needs more money from the state

To pay for his television and his heat and light

Saint Mary listens, but has problems of her own

Which intermingles with her own woes?

Being recently diagnosed with cancer

But she feels that’s the way it goes

So she must grin and bear it

Still thinks of others before herself

Has no one at home to turn to

She is a spinster left on the shelf

Married to her profession

Always putting others first

And as usual in life for caring people

They always come off worst

But Old Molly Catapult

A name to conjure with its true

Said it must have been a shot in the dark

Because her family were a motley crew

But Molly loved her garden

Where flowers bloomed all year

And Mary used to help her weed it

They enjoyed doing it together never fear

But as time went by Mary’s health became worse

She began to get tired more quickly than before

And when twilight time is near at hand

She is glad just to get through her own front door

But this particular morning she never arrived at all

No smile for Mrs Maguire, or any of the others too

Mrs Catapult felt so all alone

She did not know what to do

But she contacted the local policeman

Who called to see if Mary was all right?

And after breaking into her cottage

Found she had passed away that night

All her friends were saddened by the news

Her patients most of all

But they all knew how ill she was

And the reaper would someday call

And now in the memorial garden

Just away up the road from the infant school

They have erected a memorial garden

With a Plaque and ornamental pool

Because Mary was the person

On whom all the village could rely

And would be remembered by all that knew her

And even those who passed it by

The work that someone like Mary does

Is sometimes never really appreciated to the fullest extent

Until the day they are no longer there, then it becomes so evident
